Prompt Care When You Need It Most

When Is a Dental Problem an Endodontic Emergency?

Not every toothache requires an emergency visit, but certain symptoms signal that something more serious may be happening inside the tooth or surrounding bone. We see urgent endodontic cases from Escondido, San Marcos, Vista, Poway, and North County San Diego, often the same day.

When infection, trauma, or severe inflammation is involved, timely evaluation and treatment can make a significant difference in preserving the tooth and preventing the problem from progressing.

At Escondido Endodontics, we accommodate urgent appointments so patients in Escondido, San Marcos, Vista, and Poway can be evaluated and treated as quickly as possible. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms below, contact our office directly rather than waiting for a scheduled appointment.

Signs You May Need Emergency Endodontic Care

Seek prompt evaluation if you are experiencing:

  • Severe or escalating tooth pain that does not subside
  • Significant swelling in the gum tissue, jaw, or face
  • A tooth that has been knocked out, loosened, or displaced by trauma
  • A cracked or fractured tooth accompanied by pain or sensitivity
  • Persistent throbbing or pressure that is difficult to relieve
  • Pain or swelling following a recent root canal procedure
  • Fever or difficulty swallowing or breathing associated with dental pain

Fever, difficulty swallowing, or difficulty breathing alongside dental pain should be treated as a medical emergency. Seek care at an emergency room immediately if these symptoms are present.

What to Do Before Your Appointment

If you are in pain or have experienced dental trauma, here are a few steps to take while you wait to be seen:

For severe tooth pain or swelling:
Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen can help manage discomfort temporarily. Avoid applying heat to the area, which can worsen swelling. Call our office as soon as possible to describe your symptoms and arrange an appointment.

For a knocked-out permanent tooth:
Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it gently with water without scrubbing. Place it back in the socket if possible, or keep it moist in milk or saliva. Contact our office or an emergency dental provider immediately, as time is critical for the best outcome.

For a cracked or fractured tooth:
Rinse your mouth gently with warm water. Avoid chewing on the affected side and contact our office for an urgent evaluation.

What to Expect at an Emergency Appointment

Should I Go to the ER or an Endodontist?

Emergency rooms are not equipped to provide definitive treatment for most dental problems. If your symptoms are tooth-related without systemic complications such as swelling that is affecting your airway, high fever, or difficulty swallowing, an endodontist is the more appropriate first call. We can evaluate the tooth, treat the source of the problem, and provide the care that an emergency room is not able to offer.

If you are experiencing facial swelling that is spreading rapidly, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a high fever alongside dental pain, go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
